Stallion Overview

Six Afire (foaled 2000) is a superbly balanced sporthorse stallion. Unlike many radical "modern" quarterhorses, Six Afire is NOT over-muscled for his 16.1hh frame, and his hooves are tough, hard and appropriately sized for his weight (he does not require shoes).

Six Afire is an elegant and streamlined representative (and descendant) of the classical American light cavalry ideal, which peaked between the American Civil War and the turn of the Century. As such Six Afire compares favorably with European warmbloods such as the Trakhener, Hanoverian, Holsteiner, Oldenburg, Dutch Warmblood, Swedish Warmblood, and other breeds developed originally for military use, but later diluted heavily with thoroughbred as they were modified for horse sports like three-day-eventing. Six Afire's temperament also represents a military ideal- brave and bold, keenly competitive with great physical energy and a work ethic. His naturally fine sensitivity (sensitivity with commonsense that is not high-strung) and his desire to please places Six Afire's great speed, stamina, and agility at the slightest touch of rider command.
Speed with Bone

Six Afire is a big, black, beautiful son of Six Fols S.I. 90 and She's Sure Dashie AAA (Daughter of All American Futurity Winner: Merganser and All American Futurity Finalist: Rebelier S.I. 104, who is a daughter of Dash for Cash.)

PHOTO LEFT: Six Afire posesses magnificent strength of bone (his foreleg canon bone measurement is nine inches! (9"). Educated sport horse breeders are aware that canon bone thickness closely correlates with the size and strength of all the other bones-- including the knees, sesamoid bones, and pasterns. Increasingly public awareness of the hazards of fine-boned racehorses and sport horses, due to the Barbaro Disaster, Amy Tryon's lengthy suspension after her 3-day-eventing horse "broke down" upon landing from a fence-- should give breeders one more reason to consider Six Afire for their mare-- whether or not their mare is a fineboned hotblood. We would like to urge mare owners to be aware that draft-crosses and European warmbloods recently diluted with thoroughbred, will not breed true. The racing quarterhorse lines in Six Afire's pedigree, have and do breed true because his grandparents were closely matched physical types.

Six Afire's mother, grandmother, and great-
grandmother were all blacks: geneticists take note!
Breeding Blacks
Six Afire is currently producing 75% black progeny. There is reason to believe this is because his black genes come from his dam line. Six Afire's dam, grand-dam, and great-grand-dam were all coal blacks.
Six Afire's Rider Talks about Six Afire

Linda Richmond has this to say about Six Afire. "Six Afire is a big, black, and handsome horse. He has the big 'old-fashioned' bone that is hard to find in the horse racing industry these days.
"He is very athletic and supple. He really gets his lead hind leg up under himself. And he runs barrels with his neck low to the ground.
|

Six Afire was lead-horse on trail expeditions through the Chiracahua Mtns in AZ, extremely rough terrain like that seen in these photos from the Park's website, www.nps.gov. Other horses included mares-- quite an accomplishment considering Six Afire was an off-the-track stud colt at the time.
|
 |
"Six Afire's disposition is phenomenal. Example: As a young colt taken out of race-training as a three-year-old, with VERY spotty, on-again / off-again training, he led a series of guided tours in the Chiracahua Mountains of Arizona, country he had never previously been in-- with the dude ranch "dudes" all riding mares. Photo Left:
Six Afire produces progeny with incredible length of hip, a trait that also means he is passing on his speed and tremendous agility and rapid acceleration-in-any-direction, which comes from this natural collection. The foal in the photo is a black (probably will turn brown-black), shown here with his dun-colored foal coat that was shed shortly after the photo was taken.
The same "length of hip" which produces a long stride, in the case of Six Afire, also produces natural collection (prized in dressage) jumping scope and power (eventers and hunter-jumpers with hotblood and appendix mares take note!) and the ability to accelerate in any direction, horizontally or laterally (as required in dressage, and more down-and-dirty applications like reining, team-penning, and Linda's personal favorite... barrel racing!
Whatever your sporthorse application, Six Afire may be the best stallion choice available for your mare.
|
Linda continues, "Currently he is in barrel training, but primarily a breeding stallion. He is very laid-back and likes attention. He is the farm Overseer and makes sure everyone is in their place. He has been likened to a big black lab."
 |
Linda states that "Six Afire's 'true black,' coal-black color genetics come from his dam line with his mother, grandmother and great-grandmother all being black.
"While he did not get to go to the track because of financing, he comes from a long line of winners and money-earners. Merganser, winner of the All-American Futurity and Rebelier, All-American Futurity Finalist, being star-grandparents on his Dam's side. When looking for a stallion for your mare, don't forget to look hard at that stallion's damline! Sires and grandsires are almost always star performers... but was the dam?
|
"Six Afire's father, Six Fols (also father to Martha's Six Moons) is repeatedly in the Barrel Horse Statistics as a Top Paternal Sire and Grandsire.
"Easy Six, his paternal grandsire, was thought to be Easy Jet's best son and the one that could surpass Easy Jet's amazing accomplishments on the track-- had he not died an early death at age six." - Linda Richmond

In summary, whatever the sporthorse application you seek in the foal, and whatever your mare's breeding or bloodlines, Six Afire should be seriously considered as a top contender when comparing stallion options for your mare if the desired outcome is a racing quarterhorse or sporthorse prospect.
Specifically, the following sporthorse applications warrant top consideration in regard to breeding your mare(s) to Six Afire:
-
Barrel Racing & Reining Mares: Discounts available for proven mares.
-
Racing Quarterhorse Mares: Six Afire is a quarterhorse, not appendix, despite the thoroughbred blood throughout the top and bottom of his pedigree. Your progeny will be purebred registered if the mare is quarterhorse.

-
Dressage Mares: To hotblood mares, Six Afire will contribute greater strength, bone, natural collection, hind quarter engagement and energy from the hocks farther beneath the center of gravity. Even more significantly he will add longer attention-span, greater boldness, quietness, and trainability. Six Afire offspring are quiet, sensible, and easy to train. Many are even phlegmatic and fearless like Six Afire himself. Six Afire can be trail-ridden alone, even when he is "grained up" appropriately for barrel racing. Can the warmblood dressage stallion you are evaluating boast this?

-
Hunter-Jumper & Eventing Mares: Six Afire is a swinging, smooth, hunter-type mover, as are most race-bred quarterhorses and barrel racers. Six Afire possesses a deep shoulder, and naturally uphill build for comfortable gaits. He is NOT "daisy-cutter" which can be unsafe cross-country and over fences, due to stumbling. And he is not hot of disposition like the typical thoroughbred. Today, Preliminary and Olympic-level cross country winners are tending to be thoroughbred or 7/8th thoroughbred because of the increasing speed requirements over several miles with obstacles in the "short format." For this reason it is unlikely that racing quarterhorse offspring (even the refined, long-of-hip, and elastic Six Afire offspring) would be winners at the highest levels of cross-country jumping competitions. However, at the medium and low level regional competitions, his offspring would likely be highly competitive, successful, and COMPARATIVELY SAFE. A mom can feel good about putting her son or daughter on Six Afire offspring to hunt or go cross-country. For hunter applications, Six Afire offspring could be top winners-- depending on the conformation and jumping scope of the mare. If crossed with quality thoroughbred, appendix, or warmblood hunter-moving mares with scope, Six Afire offspring should have all the traits necessary to compete in high-level hunters.
